What took you there
To that place of despair
Where you didn’t see any other way?
They saved you but are you okay?
Are you any more alive now
Than you would have been
If they hadn’t found you that day?
I wonder, I wonder, about so much,
Like what role did I play?
But that is such an egocentric question,
And what answer could you give anyway?
You don’t owe me one, that’s for sure.
I never had any rights over you then.
I certainly can’t claim any today.
Still, I long to take your hand
And sit with you and understand
What it is that broke the man I knew
Because he wouldn’t have acted this way.
Yet, that isn’t in my power.
Nor is healing your pain.
All I can do is leave you in His care
And hope that is where you will stay.
And I can pray.
I can pray.
I can pray.
