You were told
You were warned
You had wool removed
But still you held on with visions of
Bubbles and rainbows and
Sparkling blue skies and
Wonder-widened eyes and a
Smile that would never fade
No matter how strong the
Cynicism and adversity
And a song to accompany
Steps skipped into offices and
Homes and wherever else
The need led the feet
With relentless upbeat optimism
That could shine light into the
Darkest of days and chase
Monsters of the past away
And inspire to better and
Brighter futures and nows
And fix and mend fractured
Homes and hearts and lives
Because sometimes all it takes
Is the right smile and the right
Word from just one soul that sees
The potential for bright
In a world slanted to grey
So, if you can smile hard enough
And whistle a tune to greet
Each morning with joy even as
You struggle to keep your chest open
So your bosom can absorb
Every first- and second-hand
Ache and blow and tear and trauma
In the belief that whatever helps
Is worth it then your toolkit is full
And you can do the job
You can keep going and going
Even with the knowledge
That you are working in a
System that laps up your
Dedication and good intentions
Time and time again because
They know you are in it for
The love and the principle
And take that to mean
You don’t need anything
In return and you will keep
Working slogging serving regardless
With your every-ready smile and
Flipping those social work patties
Singing your social work love song
Like some sort of limited edition
Social Worker Spongebob Action Figure
And doing whatever it takes to do
Whatever needs to be done
As you whistle whistle whistle
Your upbeat resilience anthem
All the day long
